Mckinney Vento- A Program created to serve Families Expriencing Homlessness
What is Mckinney Vento?
The Mckinney Vento Program supports students that are experiencing housing instability and homelessness who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
Who Qualifies under Mckinney Vento?
Students and families who live in any of the following situations:
- Shelter, Motel, Campground, Car, Park, Abandon Building or Bus/Train station
- Doubled up in another home due to loss of housing or economic hardship
- Inadequate housing (not enough space), infestations, lack of utilities)
Student Rights Under Mckinney-Vento :
- Immediate Enrollment
- School of origin
- Transportation
- Comparable Services
- Access to services (depending on eligibility)
- Barrier Removal
- Unaccompanied homeless youth protections
- Dispute Resolutions
- Appointment of Homless Liasion
What We Can Provide:
- Immediate enrollment and assistance retrieving needed documents
- Transportation to and from school
- School supplies, hygiene products, clothes, Shoes, Haircuts, Etc.
- Any educational costs including field trips, extracurricular expenses, graduation costs, tutoring
- Referrals to services and resources
Terms used in Mckinney-Vento:
- LEA- Local Education Agency
- Liaison- A designated staff member that is responsibler responsible for the identification, enrollment, and the removal of educational barriers for students experiencing homelessness.
- School of Origin- The school the student attended when permanently housed or school where they were that enrolled.
- Unaccompanied Youth- A child or youth experiencing homelessness who is not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
